TikTok is introducing a fresh option that permits them to cut down on the amount of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the company announced that it currently hosts more than 1 thousand million AI videos.
Testing and Rollout
This change is being tested over the next few weeks before a full-scale rollout. This development coincides with a surge in AI content, spurred by recent content generation software.
The Broader AI Trend
Recent reports that approximately one in 10 of the fastest-growing content creators on a popular video site exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this content is classified as mass-produced AI material, a label for inferior, mass-produced content that is often absurd or bizarre.
“We know from our community that a lot of users appreciate content created using AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we want to provide users the option to adjust the amount of that, according to their own likes,” said a spokesperson.
AI on the Platform
TikTok shared that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its network identified as AI-generated. Overall, in excess of 100 million pieces of content are submitted to the service each day, making clips made by AI a limited portion of its total content library.
How to Adjust Settings
Members will be able to reduce or increase the level of artificial media they view by accessing the content preference option in the application and selecting the AI content topic. Additional categories that are already be adjusted under the tool cover news, style, beauty, and movement.
Content Labeling and Policies
Its guidelines require creators to tag lifelike artificially created content, and it bans harmful deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is not labeled can be deleted under its user guidelines.
Additionally, the app will henceforth add an artificially created label to content produced via its own AI tools, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing artificial media. This action is designed to help prevent users from seeking to evade the disclosure requirement.
AI Literacy Programs
TikTok is also launching a two million dollar awareness program for specialists and institutions to develop educational content about ethical AI use. This project will support charitable organizations dedicated to educating programming and robotics.
Content Safety Approach
TikTok has justified its content review process, during discussion over proposals to make redundant a large number of content moderators in the United Kingdom. The company is planning to reduce hundreds of positions in its trust and safety department in its British office, with trade unions and internet security professionals raising concerns that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.
A senior executive stated that human moderation would remain essential, but AI can shield workers by removing the most graphic content before it has to be seen by people. TikTok stated a significant reduction in shocking and graphic content reviewed by content reviewers over the previous year due to reliance on its AI tools.
We believe it is crucial to balance humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to reduce exposure to unsafe media as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is really helping us work at speed.”
