They're Repeating in America What They Performed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and distinctive moments – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. During the period of several weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall two times larger of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of fatalities resulting from his reductions to international aid is 600,000 and growing, and presently an analysis predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have attempted – really, no previous leader would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying major areas of the White House in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.

We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the planet' to 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'

As confusing as it is to witness the president attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Essentially, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of hostility who approves specifically the brutality that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, because theoretically Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness of him because they identify as atheists or doubters or nones. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of great price in the Christian story.

It is decidedly definitely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; rather, a baby is born to displaced parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to avoid undercover officers. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his teaching concerns compassion for fellow humans, specifically for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and protecting. Christ's response to hostility is to turn the other cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a means to instruct the attacker; his method regarding offenses states that when a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer him your sweater as well.

The apparent and clear reality that Christ in biblical accounts advocates for a kind of extreme compassion centered on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but due to its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Best Within Us

Therefore I have felt inspired to observe the determined opposition to Trump emerge during the previous year. It has served as significant comfort to help build the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners throughout each rally and calls to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you welcome them and embrace them or reject?

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by relationship to the finest about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by relationship to what makes it unique and beautiful, which is the example of Christ. In all circumstances does it suggest feigning the most damaging about the nation and Christian faith did not happen; it represents both meekness and conviction, a combination that committed national faithful should be comfortable with.
